(36/52) Weekly Market Insight | September Week 3 | Almost Certain Rate Hikes

Headline News: Almost Certain Rate Hikes

  • Bitcoin retraced 4.47% last week as sticky US inflation reinforced expectations for an imminent Fed rate hike. With markets pricing an 86% chance of a 25 bps increase at this week’s FOMC meeting, the 10-year Treasury yield rose 18.5 bps toward 5%, dampening appetite across broader risk assets.

Macro-Outlook: Energy Cost Escalated

  • The US-Iran conflict escalated following reports that the US military struck and sank an Iranian commercial oil tanker near the Strait of Hormuz. Global oil markets faced severe supply disruptions as the closure of Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline following recent strikes threatened to remove 4 million barrels per day or 4% of global oil supply. WTI crude oil surged 9.59% last week, ranging above $100 level.
  • The European Central Bank raised its interest rate by 25 basis points to 2.5%, responding to resurging inflation driven by rising global energy and crude oil prices.
  • The US Treasury tripled its long-term debt repurchase operations to $6 billion, expanding direct bond-market liquidity interventions well beyond its previous $4 billion commitment.
  • The US PPI surged to 5.4% in August, marking the largest 12-month advance this year and well above market expectations of 4.8%.
  • The US headline CPI rose to 3.4% in August, matching market expectations of 3.4% and holding flat from July, while core CPI advanced 0.3% month-over-month, exceeding market expectations of 0.2%. The hotter 0.3% monthly core gain reveals entrenched services inflation alongside renewed tariff-related goods friction, keeping the Federal Reserve in an acutely restrictive posture ahead of the September FOMC meeting.

The Upcoming Economic Calendar includes,

  • Wednesday, September 16, 8:30pm: US Retail Sales in August
  • Thursday, September 17, 2:00am: US FOMC Meeting
  • Friday, September 19, 8:30pm: US Durable Goods Orders in August

Layer 1 and Layer 2s
